Bethalto Man Grateful for Clinical (and Driving) Skills of AMH EMS

Don and Dot Lemm are very thankful for the medical help that Don received from Alton Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home March 25. But just as impressive to Dot was an underrated skill that EMT Amy Green displayed.

“Amy did a tremendous job driving the ambulance, because there are so many people who really don’t make an effort to get out of the way,” Dot Lemm said. “She had to navigate some pretty tight spaces sometimes, but she got us there quickly.”

“There” was actually Christian Hospital in north St. Louis County after a brief stop at AMH. Dot rode in the ambulance from Bethalto to AMH, then rode with her son from AMH to Christian right behind the ambulance, while paramedic Shanena Brooks tended to Don.

“Unfortunately, that’s actually fairly common that not all vehicles will move out of the way,” Amy said. “But our main objective is getting the patient where he needs to be quickly and safely.”

Don Lemm, 90, doesn’t remember much of anything after feeling dizzy in his bathroom.

“We were shocking him most of the way to Christian,” Shanena said. “He kept asking us if that was necessary, and we assured him that it was.”

Don Lemm was at Christian Hospital for two days and was cared for by Dr. Saad Bitar, a cardiologist on staff at AMH as well as at Christian. Don said that he had never had any previous heart issues, and he’s doing well after several follow-up visits since his attack.

Married for 58 years, Don and Dot have two children and three grandchildren who are glad that Don is still around thanks to the skill of the Alton Memorial EMS personnel.

“I will be forever grateful for the care provided by everyone involved in my situation,” Don Lemm wrote in a letter to AMH EMS manager Jason Bowman. “Without the care and concern of Amy and Shanena, I never would have made it to the hospital in time for treatment. My truly sincere thanks to all.”
