Early Detection is Key

American Cancer Society guidelines

If you are 40 or over:

  • Clinical breast exam every year before mammogram
  • Breast self-exam every month
  • Mammogram every year
If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, discuss mammography screening guidelines and scheduling with your health care provider. Over her lifetime, a woman in the United States has about a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer and a one in 35 chance of dying from the disease.  The National Institutes of Health reports most women who get breast cancer had no significant risk factors and if breast cancer is identified early — when it is confined to the duct or local area of the breast — your chances for survival are dramatically higher.  So every woman should educate herself about breast cancer and make breast examinations – including mammograms – a priority.

Our breast services are staffed by board certified radiologists. We work very closely with referring primary physicians, surgeons and oncologists to provide comprehensive imaging evaluations. Our experienced and dedicated staff is committed to guiding each patient through the biopsy process in the timeliest and most compassionate way possible.

Alton Memorial Hospital is proud to offer 3D mammography.

3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, is a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic breast imaging tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer.  Images are displayed as a series of thin slices, providing doctors with a clearer view through overlapping breast tissue.

Cancer Conference:

A multidisciplinary team of health care providers, including surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists meet weekly to present and discuss newly diagnosed breast cancer cases and determine course of treatment.

Pathology Services:

We offer Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) and Core Needle Biopsy to our patients.  The pathologists review the samples and provide a report of the findings to your ordering physician.

Tomosynthesis builds upon the success of digital mammography allowing radiologists to look at your breast tissue in greater detail.
