Dr. Thomas Brummett is an exception to the saying that “doctors make the worst patients.” And it probably helped that Dr. Brummett specializes in pain management when he fell on some ice last January.
Dr. Brummett, who leads the Alton Pain Management practice at Alton Memorial Hospital, cracked a couple of ribs in his fall.
“Then my hip started hurting like crazy,” Dr. Brummett said.
That prompted a visit to orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Stirton at BJC Medical Group Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, located just across the parking lot from Dr. Brummett’s office in Medical Office Building A on the AMH campus. Dr. Stirton is in Medical Office Building B.
“I couldn’t hardly get around on my hip at all, so they did some X-rays that showed the hip was pretty arthritic,” Dr. Brummett said. “Dr. Stirton told me it needed to be replaced. I knew that he had extra training in total joint replacements, and he has a really good program at Alton Memorial.”
Once the replacement was done, Dr. Brummett was very happy with the recovery.
“I had my surgery on a Monday morning,” he said. “I was home Tuesday by noon and by Wednesday I was rid of the walker. I was walking around on my own in my house. I think a lot of people do really well with the technique that he uses for it. I was back in the office seeing patients within two weeks after surgery.”
It didn’t hurt at all that Dr. Brummett was already very familiar with Dr. Stirton’s work with total joint replacements.
“My background here is in anesthesia, and I had seen Dr. Stirton very frequently,” Dr. Brummett said. “We have traded patients back and forth, so I was well aware of what he does. I had no doubts about where to go after I fell.”
Dr. Brummett’s quick recovery allowed him to get back to playing some golf and doing his own yard work.
“The hip doesn’t bother me at all now,” he said. “It’s a top-flight program that Dr. Stirton has at Alton Memorial. You’re not going to find a better program anywhere else. Why travel when you can stay right here? It’s a nice set-up where we can point people just across the parking lot if that’s what they need. Alton Memorial has made a commitment to a program that has done really well for a lot of people. I would recommend it to anyone without any reservations.”
