Seven New Physicians Added to Medical Staff

Alton Memorial Hospital has added seven new physicians to its staff this summer.

Jaffer Asif, DO, a board-certified pulmonary physician, is in Suite 220 of Medical Office Building A on the AMH campus. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 618-433-6750.

Dr. Asif, a member of BJC Medical Group, provides care to patients ages 18 and older for conditions including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung disease (ILD), sarcoidosis, pneumonia, acute and chronic respiratory failure, acute and chronic shortness of breath, acute and chronic cough, pulmonary embolism, and cares for patients experiencing ongoing respiratory symptoms from COVID-19. Dr. Asif also provides various bronchoscopy procedures.

Originally from St. Louis, Dr. Asif earned his medical degree from the Kirksville (Mo.) College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Paul Eckerle, MD, a board-certified pulmonologist with the BJC Medical Group, has also started in the same office with Dr. Asif. For more information or to make an appointment, call 618-433-6750.

Dr. Eckerle specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory system disorders. Patients of all ages can visit him for treatment of a wide variety of conditions that affect the lungs and respiratory system, including COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension and much more. Dr. Eckerle also offers outpatient procedures for the diagnosis of respiratory diseases. 

Dr. Eckerle earned his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

Raffy Gutman, MD, has joined the BJC Medical Group staff at Family Physicians of Alton, located in Suite 230 of Medical Office Building B on the AMH campus. For more information or to make an appointment, please call 618-463-7777.

Patients can visit Dr. Gutman for new and acute medical issues, and preventative health care services, such as annual wellness exams, well-child exams, and vaccinations as well as for women’s health and women’s preventative medicine. Dr. Gutman values a holistic approach to medicine, including nutrition, lifestyle changes and exercise.

Dr. Gutman earned his medical degree from Saba University School of Medicine in the Netherlands Antilles. He then went on to complete his internship and Residency with Northwell Health South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, NY.

Jaleesa Gilbert-Gortman, MD, a board-certified Family Medicine physician, is accepting new patients at Alton Internal Medicine, located in Suite 220 of Medical Office Building A. For more information or to make an appointment, please call 618-474-1723.

Dr. Gilbert-Gortman provides primary care for patients 18 and older. She helps her patients address many acute and chronic medical conditions, such as high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, urinary tract infections, asthma, acid reflux, women’s health issues, gastrointestinal problems, rashes, muscle sprains and strains, and many other conditions. She also offers annual wellness exams, well-woman exams, vaccinations and other general medicine services.

Born and raised in New York, Dr. Gilbert-Gortman earned her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine. She then went on to complete her residency in Family Medicine at Northwell Health ETC Glen Cove Hospital in New York.

Christine Taylor, MD, an experienced board-certified Obstetrics & Gynecology physician, is joining Alton OB/GYN Associates, located in Suite 125 of Medical Office Building B on the AMH campus. For more information or to make an appointment, please call 618-433-6410.

Dr. Taylor accepts patients 13 years and older. She provides comprehensive obstetric and gynecological care, including well-woman exams, prenatal care and delivery, menopausal management, cervical cancer screenings, and contraception counseling. She also provides evaluation and treatment of abnormal bleeding, vulvar conditions and other gynecologic concerns.

In addition to routine gynecologic surgeries, Dr. Taylor has been performing robotic surgery since 2011. She believes that robotic surgery allows women who need surgery to recover faster and easier.

Dr. Taylor attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and did residency at Saint Louis University. She chose to practice Obstetrics & Gynecology because she enjoys caring for women throughout the different stages of life. Originally from Oklahoma, Dr. Taylor practiced in the Alton area from 2001 to 2005.

Shoichiro Tanaka, MD, MPH, board-certified in General Surgery, has joined the staff of Washington University Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, located in Suite 101 of Medical Office Building A on the AMH campus. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 618-433-6131.

Dr. Tanaka specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery, hand and wrist surgery, microvascular surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, along with comprehensive skin cancer care.

A native of New York State, Dr. Tanaka earned his medical degree from Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, with fellowships in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Hand and Microsurgery.

Megan Sauer, MD, OB/GYN, has joined the Alton Multispecialists and Alton Memorial Hospital medical staff.

Dr. Sauer joins Dr. Rachel Durham at Alton Multispecialists, 1 Professional Drive in Alton. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 618.463.1181.

Dr. Sauer provides care for all aspects of pregnancy, from pre-pregnancy counseling to post-partum care. She will advise on prenatal nutrition and exercise, and will help patients choose the delivery options that best suit their needs.

A native of the Metro East, Dr. Sauer earned her medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. She completed her Obstetrics Residency at Saint Louis University earlier this year.
