Beeby Wing Lobby
One Memorial Drive
Alton, Illinois 62002
Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes, which is an increase of 61 percent since the 1990s. Nearly a quarter of all Americans 60 and older have diabetes, and almost 240,000 deaths in 2005 listed diabetes as a contributor.
The Diabetes Management Center of Alton Memorial Hospital will host a diabetes fair featuring the latest information about diabetes medications, treatments and medical equipment. Diabetes educators and dietitians from Alton Memorial Hospital, and representatives from the American Diabetes Association will be available to answer questions.
Screenings
Health screenings will be held in Alton Memorial's Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, just down the hall from the lobby. The package of screenings costs $10, space is limited and screenings are by appointment only. Screenings include:
- A blood glucose check
- A1C screenings
- Foot screenings
- Consultation with Judy Mayhew, diabetes educator at Alton Memorial Hospital
To register for the fair and screening package, call toll-free 800.392.0936.
Dr. James Lieber, an Alton optometrist active with the Godfrey Lions Club, will provide free diabetic retinopathy screenings in the lobby. Appointments are not required for the retinopathy screenings.
Presentations
The Diabetes Fair will feature two presentations in the Cafeteria Conference Rooms:
- 10 a.m. -- Joshua Moyer, one of the chefs in the AMH cafeteria, will demonstrate some healthy recipes for diabetics
- 11:30 a.m. -- Dr. Julio Leey, an endocrinologist who recently joined the AMH staff this summer, will discuss ways to prevent the onset of diabetes
Subway will serve a free boxed meal in the hospital cafeteria beginning at 11 a.m.
Attendees are asked to enter Alton Memorial Hospital's new Duncan Wing and follow signs to the fair registration at the end of the main corridor on the ground floor. Sign-in for the $10 screening package is separate and will occur next to the Wound Care Center entrance after entering the fair.
