People experiencing constant (or chronic), unbearable pain can find relief at Alton Memorial Hospital's Pain Management Center in Glen Carbon. Pain medicine specialists perform a thorough examination to help determine the cause of a patient's chronic pain. Once diagnosed, a course of treatment is planned.
Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is pain that persists past the time of normal healing from an injury or illness. Chronic pain can occur with or without signs of injury or illness. Left untreated, pain can become a disease itself.

The Center provides outpatient evaluation and treatment of severe pain, including:

- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Arm pain

- Foot or hand pain
- Herniated (bulging or ruptured) disks
- Muscle pain

- Radiating leg pain
- Diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain)
- Abdominal pain
Therapies
Traditional pain relief treatments, as well as the latest interventional therapies, are available at the Pain management Center. Medications are often effective in treating chronic pain. Interventional therapies may include trigger injections that block pain signals to the brain. When medications fail, surgically implanted pumps and spinal cord stimulators may be warranted.
Vertebroplasty
Some patients with back problems may benefit from vertebroplasty, a structural reinforcement of the vertebra using a special cement-like substance. The procedure (performed only at the Hospital) can reinforce fractured bone and alleviate back pain.
