OsteoBall

Osteoporosis, often called the "silent disease" because bone loss occurs without symptoms, affects 8 million American women, and it can strike at any age. With osteoporosis, the bone tissue thins and becomes porous and weak, causing an increased risk of fractures of the hip, spine and wrist from something as minor as a slight bump or a fit of coughing. A woman's risk of hip fracture is equal to her combined risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer
For women at risk of osteoporosis, Alton Memorial Hospital offers the OsteoBall program. OsteoBall offers 10 different resistive, isometric exercises that target the arms, legs, neck and back and take only 10 minutes a day.
These exercises help:
- Stimulate blood flow
- Strengthen joints
- Keep bones strong
How to Enroll
If you feel OsteoBall might benefit you, talk with your physician. If a bone density test shows you have osteoporosis or if you're at risk for the disease, your doctor can refer you to the OsteoBall exercise program. A physician referral is required. The program is covered by Medicare and many other health plans.
