Memory Lane Secure Dementia Unit at Eunice Smith Home
Memory Lane Secure Dementia Unit provides comfortable, home-like facilities and an attentive staff, ensuring exceptional care for patients and peace of mind for their families.
Person-Centered Care
Rather than forcing patients to conform to their new surroundings, the Memory Lane care team uses "Person-Centered Care" to "reach into a resident's world." Through this innovative approach to patient care, staff learn residents' life history with the help of family members. We engage residents in favorite activities from early in their lives to improve their quality of life, their comfort level and to help them cope with their condition. Family members are encouraged to bring in mementos and other reminders to share with their loved ones.
Because people with Alzheimer's disease do not always respond well to a structured environment, we give residents freedom from routines. For example, they can eat and sleep whenever they chose.
The Comforts of Home
Memory Lane Secure Dementia Unit is a 22-bed residence located at Eunice Smith Home in the renovated and upgraded west wing. The facility features a furnished community living room and kitchen, creating a home-like atmosphere. Each sleeping room is furnished. Residents' families are encouraged to decorate the room with family photos and keepsakes.
Resident Activities
As a part of admission, residents and their families complete an interest survey. The survey explores past and current interests and allows staff to create unique activities for each resident. Personalized therapeutic activities provide age- and stage-appropriate social, physical, spiritual, emotional and cognitive opportunities. Group programming includes music therapy, movies, safe exercises, table games and reminiscing.
Skilled and Caring Staff
A multidisciplinary team of health-care professionals staffs Memory Lane. The team includes doctors, registered nurses, certified nurse assistants, dietitians and activities aides. Ongoing education and training in the care of those with Alzheimer's disease is an essential part of staff development.
Family Involvement and Support
Throughout the resident's stay, families are invited to contribute and update their loved one's personal history records. By creating a "life story," staff members and caregivers become aware of personal interests and accomplishments. This assists the activities director in creating unique activities for each resident and allows staff to better relate to residents on a personal level. Family members are kept updated and informed of their loved one's activities and care.
A special Alzheimer's disease support group is offered exclusively for families of Memory Lane residents. The support group is an excellent source of information, and provides emotional and spiritual support to family members and caregivers.
